Heat Pump Services in Kansas City
Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling by reversing refrigerant flow, pulling heat from inside the home in summer and from outdoor air in winter, even in cold temperatures. Lancaster Brothers installs, repairs, replaces, and maintains all major heat pump systems in the Kansas City area, including dual-fuel setups and replacements for existing HVAC equipment. Our HVAC contractors diagnose issues like poor heating performance, system freezing, unusual noises, nad high energy bills, then recommends the most effective repair, replacement, or maintenance option.
Ductless Mini-Split
Ductless mini-splits use heat pump technology without relying on a central duct system. One outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor air handlers, allowing individual rooms or zones to receive their own heating and cooling. Lancaster Brothers installs, replaces, and maintains ductless mini-splits. We determine how many zones the property needs, where the indoor units should be positioned, and what equipment capacity will provide consistent comfort.
How Does A Heat Pump Work?
A heat pump moves heat instead of creating it through combustion, using refrigerant, coils, a compressor, and a reversing valve to transfer heat in either direction. In cooling mode, it removes heat from indoor air and releases it outside, functioning similarly to a central air conditioner. In heating mode, the process reverses. The outdoor coil absorbs available heat from the air and transfers it indoors. As temperatures drop, efficiency decreases, and some systems rely on electric resistance heat or a gas furnace in dual-fuel setups.

Frequently Asked Heat Pump Questions
Can a heat pump handle a Kansas City winter?
Modern heat pumps can continue providing heat at temperatures well below freezing, but capacity and efficiency vary by model. The home’s heating load, equipment performance data, insulation, ductwork, and backup heat should all be considered. Some Kansas City homes use a heat pump with electric supplemental heat, while others pair it with a gas furnace in a dual-fuel system.
Is a heat pump cheaper to operate than a furnace?
Operating cost depends on electricity and gas prices, outdoor temperatures, equipment efficiency, the building’s heat loss, and the type of backup heat. During mild spring and fall weather, heat pumps are often cheaper to run than gas furnaces because they move heat instead of burning fuel, and high-efficiency models can deliver 2-3 units of heat for every unit of electricity used. In prolonged sub-freezing temperatures, operating costs can rise because the system relies more on auxiliary electric heat or a backup furnace, which reduces or eliminates efficiency advantages.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a mini-split?
A mini-split is a type of heat pump. A central heat pump distributes conditioned air through ductwork, while a ductless mini-split sends refrigerant directly to wall-mounted, floor-mounted, or concealed indoor units. Mini-splits are commonly used for individual rooms, additions, and zoned comfort.
